Dealing With the Aftermath of Hurricane Florence in Greater Charlotte

The arrival of Hurricane Florence was in mid-September, but we are feeling the affects of the storm as if it occurred yesterday. Especially on our beloved coastline, North Carolina is still struggling, and may be for awhile yet, as some people have lost everything. In the Charlotte area, we did not face the storm head-on – however, we experienced our fair share of the aftermath in our beloved city after the enormous system passed. Here is what the Greater Charlotte area experienced in the wake of Florence.

Significant Flooding

Due to Florence, the Monday after the hurricane hit, the Charlotte area experienced between 6 and 8 inches of rain in a single day, on top of the intense thunderstorms beforehand. As imagined, immense flooding ensued as rivers and creeks overflowed. Low-lying streets, properties, and backyards were filled with standing water, and the area was on flash flood watch until the following Tuesday. Some schools were closed for added precaution, but many were housebound anyway due to the flooding.

Mass Power Outages and Fallen Trees

At one point, Mecklenburg County in the Charlotte area had approximately 27,000 homes without electricity at its highest. It gradually went down to around 12,300 on Monday, and on the same day there were still 3,500 homes without power in Montgomery County, 1,500 in Anson County, 1,000 in Union County, and the list went on. It took awhile for power to be fully restored once again, as power lines were brought down by falling trees and intense winds from the storm. Not only did the trees bring down large power line poles, but massive trees fell on homes and properties, causing immeasurable devastation and the need for immediate restoration.
